On October
12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th of 2010,
the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a bomb threat from
Southside High School in Chocowinity. Deputies
from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office along with members of Chocowinity
Volunteer Fire Department, Chocowinity EMS, and Beaufort County Emergency
Management assisted the Southside staff in a search of the campus each day. No suspicious devices were located during the
searches. The Sheriff’s Office began an
investigation and conducted interviews. On October 14th, 2010,
School Resource Officer, Corporal Walt Zerniak applied for and obtained a warrant
charging Gregory Randolph Latham,
age 18, of Fort Canal Road in Chocowinity with one count of Felony False Bomb Report to a Public
Building for the threat found on October 14th. On October 15th,
2010, Latham was arrested by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and released
to his parents on a custody bond. On October 20th, Cpl. Zerniak applied for and obtained a warrant charging Aaron Thomas Moore, age 16, of Old Blounts Creek Road in Chocowinity with Felony False Bomb Report to a Public Building for the threat discovered on October 12th. Moore was arrested on October 20th and released on a $1,000.00 unsecured bond. Southside High School received a fifth bomb threat on October 22nd. A 15 year old juvenile suspect has been identified and will be charged by Juvenile Petition in that case. The threats found on October 13th and 15th are still under investigation. On October 18, 2010, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office
received a report of a breaking and entering and theft at a residence on Cherry
Run Road in Washington, NC. The
Sheriff’s Office began an investigation, collected evidence and conducted
interviews. On October 20, 2010, Investigator Rob
Voliva applied for and obtained warrants charging Khalil Mujahid Al-Amin aka Jerry
Lee Andrews, age 35, of 1019 North Bonner St. in Washington with one felony
count of Breaking And Entering, one count
of Larceny of A Firearm, and one count
of Possession of Firearm By Felon. Investigator Voliva also applied for and
obtained warrants charging Stephen
Bradford Nichols, age 31, of 414 Charlotte St. in Washington with one
felony count of Breaking And Or Entering
and one count of Larceny of A Firearm. Several stolen firearms were recovered during
the investigation. Al-Amin and Nichols
are suspects in other crimes that are currently under investigation. Both suspects are still at-large. If you have any information on the

On October 06, 2010, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit
arrested Curtis Lester Burroughs III, 53 years of age, of 7414 Free Union
Church Road in Pinetown. Burroughs was
charged with Manufacturing Marijuana,
Felony Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Burroughs’
arrest stemmed from Investigators conducting surveillance on Burroughs after
receiving complaints that Burroughs is involved in using, selling and growing
marijuana. Investigators
conducted a traffic stop on Burroughs.
K-9 Elza alerted on the vehicle that Burroughs was operating. Investigators conducted a search of the
vehicle and found harvested marijuana plants. Burroughs
was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $10,000.00 secured

On October 04, 2010, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug
Unit arrested Jimmy Joshua Lewis, 21 years of age, of 808 W 13th
Street in Washington. Lewis was charged
with Possession with Intent to Sell and
Deliver Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Probation Absconder. Lewis’
arrest stemmed from Investigators conducted a traffic stop on Lewis knowing
that Lewis was wanted by Probation. K-9
Elza alerted on the vehicle that Lewis was operating. Investigators conducted a search of the
vehicle and found marijuana packaged for resale. Lewis was

On October 13, 2010, Cedric Shawndale Coffey, 34 years of age, of 3490 West Road
in Aurora was served with arrest warrants from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s
Office Drug Unit. Coffey was charged
with two counts of Possession with
Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine. Coffey’s
arrest stemmed from Investigators making purchases of cocaine from Coffey. Coffey was confined in the Beaufort County Detention

On September 18, 2010, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit
served an arrest warrant on Archie Minor, 28 years of age, of 1661 Idalia Road
in Aurora. Minor was charged with Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver
Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Minor’s
arrest stemmed from Investigators making a purchase of cocaine from Minor. Minor was confined in the Beaufort County

On October 7, 2010 at 12:40 p.m., the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a deceased male at 115 South Main Street in Bath, N.C. Deputies responded to the scene and located the body of Leonard Alfred Willson III, age 53, of that address. The Sheriff’s Office secured the property and began an investigation. During a search of the crime scene, Investigators determined that the death was a homicide. Willson was a paraplegic and had lived in Bath approximately fifteen years. He could be frequently seen cycling in and around Bath on his recumbent handcycle. Preliminary results from the autopsy indicate that Willson’s cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. As Investigators worked multiple leads, Beaufort County Crime Stoppers received a tip indicating a possible suspect. Investigators identified the suspect and set up surveillance on his residence. On October 14th, a search warrant was obtained and served at the suspect’s residence in Belhaven. Evidence was collected and processed. Interviews were also being conducted to develop additional leads. At approximately 11:00 p.m., Investigators learned that the suspect had been arrested by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office for Resist, Delay, Obstruct a Public Officer. Investigators traveled to Greenville and spoke with the suspect. The suspect returned to Beaufort County with Investigators and was interviewed. As a result of information collected during the investigation, Lt. Jamie Cahoon applied for and obtained a warrant charging Arturo Lopez-Perez, age 16, of O’Neal Hill Drive in Belhaven with Murder in the death of Len Willson III. Lopez was held in the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond. Investigators
then applied for and obtained a search warrant for the home and vehicle of a
second suspect that resides in Belhaven.
On the morning of October 15, Deputies and Investigators with the
Sheriff’s Office served the search warrant at 671 Pamlico Street in Belhaven
and arrested Martel Deval Weston,
age 22, of Pamlico Street in Belhaven, N.C. Weston was charged with Murder in the death of Len Willson III. The investigation is on-going and
investigators have recovered items stolen from the murder scene. Additional charges are expected against Lopez

On June 23, 2010, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received
a report of a Breaking and Entering and Larceny that occurred at a residence on
York Street in Washington, NC. The
victim reported several items stolen including two LCD televisions. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation,
collected evidence, and conducted interviews. As a result,
Investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained warrants charging Cortez Donte Pope, age 17, of Harvey’s
Hamlet Road in Washington with one(1) count of Felony Breaking
and Entering and one(1) count of
Felony Larceny. A Juvenile Petition was
also obtained for a juvenile involved in the incident. Pope was
arrested on October 08, 2010 and was held in the Beaufort County Detention
Center under a $3,500 secured bond set by Magistrate Curtis. The Juvenile will be summoned before Juvenile

On October 8, 2010, Deputy Robert
Gaskins assisted the North Carolina State Highway Patrol with an arrest made at
a license checkpoint on River Road in Washington N.C. The NCSHP arrested Kenneth Earl Daniels, age 51, of Bonner Circle in Washington N.C.
at the checkpoint for DWI. A search of
Daniels produced four small plastic bags containing marijuana. A fifth bag containing marijuana was later
found on Daniels. As a result, Deputy Gaskins obtained a warrant charging Daniels with Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana. The
Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office performs routine verification of addresses for
registered sex offenders in Beaufort County. On June 14, 2010, the Sheriff’s Office discovered
that an offender was not at his registered address. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation
and conducted interviews regarding the offender’s whereabouts. During the investigation, social networking
sites associated with the suspect were found. On August 31, 2010, Investigator
Wesley Waters applied for and obtained warrants charging Steven Laron Bonner, age 25, of Yeatesville Road in Bath, NC with one
count of Failing to Report Change of
Address-Sex Offender, and two counts of
Sex Offender use of Social Website. On
October 2, 2010, Bonner was arrested by the Washington Police Department and
held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $40,000.00 secured bond set

Sheriff’s Office received a report of a Breaking and Entering and Larceny that occurred
at a residence on Big Hill Road in Edward NC.
The victim reported a firearm and US currency stolen. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation,
collected evidence, and conducted interviews. As a result
of the investigation, Investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained
warrants charging Jeremy Tetterton,
age 18, of Highway 33 East in Aurora with one(1) count of Felony Breaking
and Entering, one(1) count of Felony
Larceny, and one(1) count of Larceny
of a Firearm. Tetterton
was arrested on September 30, 2010 and was held in the Beaufort County
Detention Center under a $15,000 secured bond set by Magistrate Holmes for this
