On February 16, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Drug Unit arrested Carlton Maryland, 22 years of age, of 52 Springs Road in Washington. Maryland was charged with three counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine. Maryland's arrest stemmed from Investigators receiving information that Maryland was making deliveries of crack cocaine in a Cadillac with New Orleans painted on the side. Investigators conducted surveillance on Maryland and made three purchases of crack cocaine from Maryland. Thanks to a Crime Stoppers tip, Bobby Gene Elks, age 41, has been arrested in Potts Camp, Mississippi. Elks was arrested at approximately 7:30 p.m. on February 23rd, by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Elks is being held without bond, while he awaits extradition back to North Carolina. Elks was wanted for failure to appear in Beaufort County Court on a charge of First Degree Rape of a Child. Elks was originally charged after an investigation by the Washington Police Department. On June 18, 2008,the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sex offense against a minor on Mary Street in Chocowinity, NC. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation in conjunction with the Beaufort County Department of Social Services. Several interviews were conducted and physical evidence was collected. On July 28, 2008, Investigator Josh Shiflett applied for and obtained warrants charging Aaron House-Moore Bryant, age 42, of Mary Street in Chocowinity with two counts of Statutory Rape of Person Who Is 13, 14, or 15 Years Old by a Defendant Who Is at Least Six Years Older than the Victim. Bryant moved away from his home in Chocowinity before the Sheriff’s Office was able to make an arrest. Investigators listed Bryant as wanted in the National Crime Information Center’s computer system. On February 12, 2009, Bryant was apprehended in Greensboro, NC by the Greensboro Police Department and held on a $250,000.00 secured bond. He was later transferred to the Beaufort County Detention Center. Bryant was tracked down with the help of Investigator Roger Sims of the District Attorney’s Office in Beaufort County. On December 22, 2008, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of Larceny from a highway construction site on US Highway 17, south of Chocowinity. Information on potential suspects was included in the report. On January 13, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report from the Pitt County Sheriff's Office indicating that the same suspects had defrauded a Beaufort County business by selling them stolen goods. The Sheriff's Office began an investigation and conducted several interviews. On February 10, 2009, Investigator Wesley Waters applied for and obtained warrants charging William David Wallace, age 38, of US Highway 17 North in Vanceboro, NC and Christopher Allen Sherbert, age 30, of US Highway 17 North in Vanceboro, NC with one count each of Felony Larceny and two counts each of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. On February 11, 2009, Wallace and Sherbert turned themselves in and were released on $25,000.00 unsecured bonds by Magistrate Mills. On February 15, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of an alleged sexual assault against a child. The victim's mother reported her daughter had been inappropriately touched by a family member. The Sheriff's Office began an investigation and conducted interviews. As a result of information obtained during the investigation, Investigator Robert Gaskins applied for and obtained a warrant charging Bobby Smith Lewis, age 61, of Fredrick Road in Chocowinity with one count of First Degree Sex Offense with Child and one count of Sexual Activity by a Substitute Parent. Lewis was arrested on February 16, 2008 and confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $30,000.00 secured bond. On January 30, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of a breaking and entering and larceny that occurred at a residence on Whichard's Beach Road in Chocowinity. The victim reported their sliding glass door had been broken and objects had been taken from the residence. The Sheriff's Office began an investigation and conducted interviews. As a result, Investigator Dwight Williams applied for and obtained a warrant charging Tyler Ayers, age 16, of Whichard's Beach Road and Nicholas Cherry, age 16, of Whichard's Beach Road with Felony Breaking and Entering and Felony Larceny. A Juvenile Petition was also obtained for a juvenile involved in the incident who was under the age of 16. On Feb. 5, 2009, Tyler Ayers was arrested and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000.00 secured bond. On Feb. 6, 2009 Nicholas Cherry was arrested and held in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000.00 secured bond. |

On February 9th, 2009, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received reports from three churches in the Washington area that had been broken into since the night before. Cash and electronics were reported stolen. The Sheriff's Office believes that today's reports may be linked to six other church break-ins that have been reported in Beaufort County since December of 2008. In all nine of the cases, a thief or thieves have entered the churches and conducted a thorough search. Investigators believe they are searching for cash. Anyone with information on these cases is asked to call Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at (252)946-7111 or Beaufort County Sheriff's Office at (252)974-6400. On December 25, 2008, the Sheriff's Office received a tip about a truck traveling to Washington from Bath containing stolen property. Patrol Deputies located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, James Wayne Turnage, age 38, of 2713 N. Elizabeth Harbor Drive in Chesapeake, Va. was arrested on an outstanding Larceny warrant from Pitt County and the passenger, Valerie James Moore, age 40, of 3787 McGregory Downs Road in Greenville, N.C. was arrested for Possession of Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Thirteen LP gas tanks were located in the bed of the truck. The truck was towed and Turnage and Moore were later released on bond. On December 26, 2008 the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of Larceny from Brooks Grocery on Hwy 92 East in Bath. The owner reported that twenty LP gas tanks had been stolen from a storage area outside of the store. During the investigation, the Sheriff's Office collected evidence that identified the recovered tanks as the ones taken from the store. On January 16, 2009, The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of stolen fuel from the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources on Hwy 264 East in Washington. The Sheriff's Office Patrol Division began checking the Forestry building after the initial report to monitor activity at the location. On January 18th, Deputy Landeck checked the property and observed a fresh trail of spilt fuel that left the Forestry property and headed east on Highway 264. Deputies followed the trail and located a truck with a container in the bed that contained approximately 125 gallons of diesel fuel at a residence on Turnage Road. The Sheriff's Office began an investigation and conducted several interviews. On January 28, 2009, Investigator Wesley Waters applied for and obtained warrants charging Valerie James Moore and James Turnage with one felony count each of Larceny for the LP tanks taken from Bath. Waters also obtained a warrant charging Turnage with felony Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle and felony Larceny for the stolen fuel from the Forestry Service. On January 30th, Valerie Moore turned herself in at the Sheriff's Office and was held on a $1,500.00 secured bond. On December 5th 2008, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of fraudulent activity where a stolen credit card number was used to make purchases from different internet websites. The Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation and conducted several interviews. On January 29th 2009, Investigator Jamie Cahoon applied for and obtained a warrant charging Zachary Jay Boyd, age 17, of Biggs Road, in Pinetown, North Carolina with one felony count of Identity Fraud, one felony count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses. On January 29, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Kathleen Maxwell, 43 years of age, of 253 Brittany Place in Washington and David Roberson, 23 years of age, of 253 Brittany Place in Washington. Maxwell was charged with two counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine and two counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Roberson was charged with Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine, Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Marijuana and two counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Their arrest stemmed from Investigators making controlled purchases of crack cocaine and marijuana from their residence. Investigators conducted a search of their residence and found a small quantity of marijuana, plastic baggies use to repackage a controlled substance and a 22 caliber Phoenix Arms pistol. Maxwell was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $3,000.00 secured bond. Roberson was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $10,000.00 secured bond. On January 29, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Tion Ernul, 23 years of age, of 336 Respess Street in Washington, Adgrikist Floyd, 22 years of age, of 1130 Maple Street in Washington and Latoya Moore of 223 Windley Road in Washington. Ernul was charged with four counts of Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine and three counts of Failure to Appear for Possession with Intent to Sell and Deliver Cocaine. Floyd and Moore were charged with Conspiracy to Sell and Deliver Cocaine. Their arrest stemmed from Investigators making controlled purchases of crack cocaine from Ernul. On one occasion Moore and Floyd delivered crack cocaine with Ernul. Ernul was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond. Floyd was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $20,000.00 secured bond. Moore was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5,000.00. On September 31st, 2008, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sex offender registered in Beaufort County who failed to notify the Sheriff’s Office of an address change. The Sheriff’s Office began an investigation and conducted several interviews. On December 15th, 2008, Investigator Jamie Cahoon applied for and obtained a warrant charging Clarence Kevin Thigpen, age 43, of North Market Street in Washington, NC with one count of Failure to Register Change of Address as a Sex Offender. On January 13th, 2009, Thigpen was arrested in New Jersey and held for extradition to North Carolina. On February 6th, 2009, he was brought before Magistrate D. On February 6, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested James Douglas Smith, 43 years of age, of 3661Bay City Road in Aurora. Smith was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving While Impaired. Smith’s arrest stemmed from Investigators conducting surveillance on a residence on Idalia Road in Aurora reported to be involved in the distribution of drugs. Investigators witnessed Smith drive by the residence smoking marijuana. Investigators conducted a traffic stop on Smith and conducted a search. Investigators found eight grams of marijuana, rolling papers and four marijuana smoking pipes. Smith was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $500.00 secured bond. On February 9, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit and the Division of Community Corrections arrested Gemean Tiyoung Moore, 29 years of age, of 1852 Bonnerton Road in Aurora. Moore was charged with Possession of Cocaine and Probation Violation. Moore’s arrest stemmed from Investigators assisting the Division of Community Corrections with a search of Moore and his residence. Investigators found a small safe that contained cocaine residue. Moore was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $55,000.00 secured bond. |

On February 6, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Richard Earl Long aka Hanif Muhammad, 52 years of age, of 1504 Kansas Street in Richmond Virginia. Long was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Long’s arrest stemmed from Investigators smelling the odor of marijuana coming from room 236 of the Washington Motel. Investigators conducted a search of room 236 and found a plastic bag containing marijuana and a marijuana cigarette. On February 6, 2009, Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Tammy Woolard Kidd, 48 years of age, of 543 Old Mill Road in Chocowinity. Kidd was charged with Possession of Cocaine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Kidd’s arrest stemmed from Investigators conducting a traffic stop on Kidd after she visited a residence known to be involved in the distribution of crack cocaine. Investigators conducted a search and found two plastic baggies containing crack cocaine. Kidd was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $5000.00 secured bond.
